Laura Marling

Laura Marling is a 17 year old singer/songwriter, and is poised to be the next-big-thing. She is British, and writes cute, quirky songs about boys... Which is bound to create comparisons to Lily Allen, although Laura is more talented and not nearly as obnoxious. Calling her a younger version of Regina Spektor or Martha Wainwright is more fitting. No word on an official release yet, but she has been courted by many labels in London recently and has been seen opening for Jamie T on tour.

EDIT (1.14.08): Since I can't find my original MP3 of her demo, so here is the version from the My Manic and I EP...

Laura Marling - New Romantic

RIYL: Lily Allen, Regina Spektor, Kate Nash, Beth Orton

She is fab, saw her on Jools Holland last week and she beat the grey whistle test 4 me! Havnt stopped humming the song since and thinking about her cutsie-broken-hearted-indie face.

Actually, she's much closer in style to early Joni Mitchell, but I suppose no one (except for Marling) actually listens to her anymore. That said, Marling is the best young singer songwriter I've heard in ages, and to compare her to Lily Allen is sort of an insult.

Joni Mitchell has been one of my favorite singers for years, and I'm only eighteen...

But I digress. Laura Marling is simply amazing. I recently discovered her, but I plan to check out a lot more of her stuff.

'cute, quirky songs about boys' - are you insane? You make her sound like early Kylie. Laura Marling's songs have enormous emotional depth; listening to her is like waking up on your birthday, remembering all the people you thought you'd forgotten, looking ahead to the day you turn to vapour and then feeling blessed because your body's found some new life you thought you'd lost.

And she's like, just like, the legendary Judee Sill far more than she's comparable to Joni.

Just wanted to say that I agree with all the comments here... I've since heard many more songs by Laura and realize my original comments barely touched on her immense talent. I had only heard two songs by her, so forgive me. :) She is brilliant, most definitely!

She is a great, great talent. Where she gets the wisdom beyond her years is a mystery to me. I'll just enjoy it.

your description of her couldnt be further from the truth. she doesnt write cutsie lyrics, and they arent about boys. she isnt a young regina spektor, and she is not poised to be the next big thing. She is a real artist... she promotes art for art's sake... not cutsie songs about boys. this blog is incorrect

Dear most recent Anonymous,

I agree with you, but at the time I wrote this I had only heard TWO SONGS by Laura. One was "New Romantic" which is about boys (which I realize is a simplification). This post is REALLY OLD, and does not reflect on the talent that we now know Laura has...

Thanks.
Hi-Fi
